Hebburn Town open the competitive season away to Sunderland RCA in cup action on Saturday afternoon.

THE LOWDOWN

The Hornets travel to Sunderland LGV Park in the Emirates FA Cup extra preliminary round - Daniel Moore's first competitive game in the hot seat.

Hebburn's thrilling pre-season form included wins against Gateshead and Sunderland U23s, losing just one of seven friendlies to South Shields.

Moore's side enjoyed last weekend off but Liam Henderson and Jack Donaghy appeared for our U23s, with the former scoring a header in the first half.

Sunderland RCA have played two Northern League fixtures already this campaign, both resulting in draws.

The first was on July 30, where Callum Patton came off the bench to fire home Andrew Johnson's cross in injury time to earn a 1-1 draw at Carlisle City.

They played out a stalemate at home to West Allotment Celtic in midweek, despite late penalty shouts for the hosts.

Replays are mandatory in this competition meaning we could welcome RCA on August 9 should Saturday result in a draw - the winner of the tie will advance to play either Whickham or Frickley Athletic on the road.

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS

"It was disappointing - you don't ever like getting beat 4-0," Mark Hudson assessed following our final pre-season game against South Shields.

"We restricted them for the first 15 minutes, but the first goal was a sloppy back pass and our game plan then went out the window.

"We'll work on shape and set-pieces in training to make sure we're right for the RCA game."

LAST MEETING

Hebburn have faced RCA in a number of spectacular battles over the years, the last being at The Green Energy Sports Ground in October 2020.

The game was all square going into the last 30 minutes, when Jonathan Carr bundled the ball past Mark Foden for the visitors.

Cedwyn Scott spearheaded Hebburn's comeback, netting a brace before Michael Richardson made it 3-1.

Dylan Elliot got on the scoresheet in injury time for RCA, but The Hornets stayed tight to ensure three points in Northern League action.

FAMILIAR FACES

Hebburn's assistant Mark Hudson and goalkeeping coach Carl Morris are no strangers to RCA, spending time in Ryhope during their playing days.

Right winger Joe Walton, who could make his competitive debut at the weekend, also started his career at RCA before moving to Spennymoor Town.
