PREVIEW | Gateshead (H)

PREVIEW | Gateshead (H)

Josh Youll3 Jul 2023 - 16:11

Hebburn's first home friendly sees them face National League neighbours Gateshead on Tuesday night (7:30pm kick-off).

THE LOWDOWN

The Hornets got pre-season underway at the weekend with a 3-2 away victory over Scottish League Two outfit, Dumbarton.

Dean Briggs, Olly Martin and Amar Purewal got on the scoresheet while several U18s also impressed for Hebburn.

It was a first run out in Hebburn colours for new additions Aidan Heywood, Chay Liddle and Briggs - Matthew Elsdon was unavailable but could make his debut on Tuesday night.

Gateshead finished 14th in the National League last year, three leagues above Hebburn, and also reached the FA Trophy Final at Wembley.

Mike Williamson's side are yet to play a pre-season friendly but The Heed have made a number of impressive additions in the off-season.

Jordan Hunter, Regan Booty and Aidan Rutledge have put pen to paper at Gateshead, while former loan duo Ed Francis and Callum Whelan have joined the club permanently.

PRE-MATCH THOUGHTS

"We're looking good going into it," said Hebburn boss Daniel Moore.

"Gateshead will be a bit further along in their pre-season schedule, and it'll be tough to deal with because they play some fantastic football.

"We did really well on Saturday so we're looking forward to testing ourselves - we won't have much of the ball but when we do have it, we need to be brave like we were against Dumbarton.

"It's about learning different parts of the game in pre-season and playing Gateshead, we'll have to close the space down quickly and communicate well."

FAMILIAR FACES

Hebburn defender Tom Devitt spent the 2018/19 season with Gateshead, while Dean Briggs and Olly Martin played there as youngsters.

In the Heed camp, player-coach Louis Storey made over 100 appearances at Hebburn and captained The Hornets to the 2020 FA Vase.

LAST MEETING

Daniel Moore’s side secured a narrow victory over Gateshead last pre-season at Hebburn Sports Ground.

Oliver Walters chipped a delightful through ball into Amar Purewal's path, who kept his composure and dinked over the keeper on 52 minutes for the only goal of the game.
