Moore looks ahead to pre-season return

Moore looks ahead to pre-season return

Josh Youll28 Jun - 06:04

Hebburn boss Daniel Moore has revealed his pre-season plans, with his squad set to report back to training on Saturday morning.

The Hornets will return for pre-season training at the weekend, ahead of their first friendly against Gateshead on July 8.

Moore has revealed there will be a lot of fitness work involved for his side, but his training sessions will be planned and purposeful.

“I think pre-season has changed a lot in this day and age,” he explained.

“Lads look after themselves a lot more - we’ll obviously push them as the weeks go on, but I expect them to come back in decent shape anyway.

“We’ve got a group of strong, athletic lads and they know we like to work hard in pre-season, so I’m looking forward to it.

“I’ve always believed in getting the work done early. I’ve been around a lot of Football League set-ups and it’s a very similar routine.

“It’s not just running for the sake of running. It’s all specific - the times, distances and game related practices. We’ve met multiple times as staff to plan the sessions and make sure we’re ready to go.

“It’s part-time football and lads work hard away from the pitch so we need to manage that aspect of things as well. We don’t want to completely burn them out but we want them to go the extra mile.

“I want us to be the fittest team in the league next season and every year since I’ve been here, we’ve started really well, so it definitely pays off.

“It’s really important to start the season well, and I think as the season goes on, you then hit your fitness peak. It probably takes a few games to get completely going, but by that time a few games have gone so we need to be on it from day one.

“It’ll be hard but it’ll be purposeful. I’m not a manager that tries to reinvent the wheel. We’ll be running but running for a reason. We’ll have the balls out at some point and there will be some disguised running, it won’t be running along roads for the next four weeks.

“We like to have lots of friendlies - it’s important to have those games to spread the minutes out. Players will also be unavailable at different points due to holidays and work commitments so it ensures they still get a good amount of game time.

“There’s a plan behind it. We’ll be facing different teams and using different tactics - some games we’ll have lots of the ball and other games we won’t have as much. We’re going to split the squad for the few friendlies and by the final few games, we’ll have a strong side out there.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the new lads play and integrate into the team. Hopefully we can stay injury-free as we’ve been unlucky with that over the years.

“I’m really happy with my squad going into pre-season. I’m always keen to have everything done early so we can plan ahead. We’ve got a few younger players training with us from the club’s junior system and if they’re good enough, they’re old enough. We’re also monitoring a few trialists so there is an opportunity there for them.”
