Match Report: Shildon AFC vs Hebburn Town

William Jeffries22 Jan - 17:00

The Hornets bowed out of the Durham Challenge Cup Semi-Finals, at the hands of a strong Shildon side.

By Adam Ingoe
It was a night to forget for The Hornets, as their journey away to Shildon ended in defeat.

Amar Purewal gave Hebburn the lead after 11 minutes, but Shildon hit back on the verge of half-time as an own goal from Jack Donaghy brought the Railwaymen level.

The home side then took the lead after another own goal, but this time from Michael Turner putting the ball into his own net. Further goals from Nathan Greenwood and Billy Greulich-Smith sealed the deal and sent Shildon into the Durham Challenge Cup Final, where they will face Whickham FC.

Daniel Moore made three changes from the previous round, with Joe Walton, Olly Martin and Bailey Adamson dropping out, and Matthew Elsdon, Paul Van-Zandvliet and Dan Savage coming in.

The game in its initial footing, was balanced between the two sides, although Shildon began to look dangerous, as they won a free-kick just outside Hebburn’s box in the third minute.

The free-kick was taken short by Jon Weirs, but it was blocked by Arron Thompson.

Hebburn picked up momentum not long afterwards, and clever play by Thompson led to a free-kick in favour of The Hornets in the seventh minute. Savage crossed the ball towards Purewal, but it fell short of goal, as his header flew over the bar.

The Hornets kept the attacking momentum going and it proved sufficient. Aidan Heywood delivered a cross into Shildon’s box in the 11th minute, where Purewal was waiting, and he beat Andrew Jennison at his near post to put Hebburn ahead.

The goal provoked an attacking response from the Railwaymen. In the 22nd minute, Shildon’s Greenwood took a free-kick which found Thomas Price in the Hebburn box, but his header sailed over Callum Dobson’s crossbar.

Despite Hebburn being on the back foot for the latter stages of the first half, goalkeeper Dobson made an extraordinary triple save in the 36th minute, which denied Shildon’s Greulich-Smith a goal from close range.

However, The Railwaymen found themselves level on the verge of half-time, as Greenwood’s cross in the 47th minute, saw Donaghy put the ball in his own net, which levelled the tie.

Hebburn manager Moore opted to make a double substitution at half-time as Heywood and Van-Zandvliet were replaced by Martin and Joe Posthill.

The Hornets fears were later accentuated, when a counter-attack by Shildon in the 49th minute saw Leighton Harris cross the ball into the box, with Michael Turner scoring an own goal to put the home side ahead for the first time in the match.

Moore was then forced into a third substitution in the 50th minute, as Thompson was forced off injured and was replaced by Bailey Adamson.

In the 58th minute, Max Allen rifled a shot into the far top corner and out of Dobson’s reach, to further extend Shildon’s lead.

The Hornets continued to push to find a way back into the game which saw Murray draw a foul in the 74th minute. Savage stepped up to take the free-kick which saw a scramble in the Shildon box, before Donaghy struck a low shot that came back off the post and was cleared away by David Vincent.

Adamson was next to try his luck in the 79th minute when he got a shot away in the box, but Jennison was equal to it.

Shildon sealed victory in the latter stages of the match. In the 86th minute, a clinical shot from Greulich-Smith skid past goalkeeper Dobson, to put the icing on the cake for the home side.

Despite the Hornets best efforts, they couldn’t find a way through a resilient Shildon defence, as the referee signalled for full-time, meaning the Railwaymen advance to the Durham Challenge Cup Final at the Hornets expense.
