Hebburn suffered a first home defeat of the season as Whitby Town ran out 6-2 winners, following Paul Van-Zandvliet's first half red card.

The first chance of the game fell Hebburn's way in the fourth minute when the visitors failed to clear a cross, but Robbie Spence couldn't keep his half volley down.

Another chance fell the Hornets' way on 11 as Bailey Adamson's close-range header was palmed wide by Shane Bland.

The early pressure paid off a few minutes later when Olly Martin shot through a sea of bodies and found the net via a big deflection.

It took Whitby only two minutes to draw level when a cross to the back post was turned home by Adam Gell.

The game then went through a relatively quiet period before a game changing moment on 35 when Van-Zanvliet was dismissed for an elbow on Jassem Sukar.

Despite being down to 10 men, Hebburn regained the lead when a long throw was flicked on and headed in from close range by Adamson.

In the aftermath of the goal, Martin needed treatment and was unable to continue so was replaced by Tom Devitt.

Once again, Whitby restored parity quickly when a ball from the right was controlled by Jake Charles just inside the box and he turned a low shot into the far corner beyond Kieran Hunter.

Whitby took the lead for the first time on 57, when Hebburn failed to clear a ball into the box and Charles grabbed his second of the evening, smashing into the roof of the net.

Charles then fired dangerously across goal two minutes later but couldn't quite find a teammate and the home side scrambled behind for a corner.

The two-goal cushion was established on 63 when a corner was met by Campbell Darcy, who gave Hunter no chance.

The lead was almost extended at the midway point of the second half when Joseph Gibson found Charles, and the inside of the post denied him his hattrick.

The chances kept coming and just a minute later Stephen Walker saw the ball sit up nicely for him but his volley was wide of the near post.

Walker then danced his way through a couple it challenges but Hunter managed to block with his feet.

Hebburn had an opportunity at the other end when substitute Liam Murray, making his 100th appearance for the club, controlled on his chest but then blasted his effort over the bar.

With 15 minutes to go the points were made safe as Whitby grabbed a fifth. Darcy fired the ball across goal and Walker wasn't to be denied this time as he brought the ball down and fired into the back of the net.

Walker continued to get opportunities, forcing a good low save from Hunter moments later but it was Josef Wheatley who grabbed number six with 10 to play following a mix up in the Hornets' defence.

A bad day at the office got even worse as Manager Daniel Moore was sent to the stands for dissent, ending a frustrating evening for Hebburn.
