Hebburn continued their pre-season with another heavy defeat on Tuesday which came at the hands of Gateshead, with the full time scoreline being 1-7 to our neighbours.
Similar to Saturday, we began with a strong starting XI and made plenty of changes as the game went on.
The first chance came way of the visitors in the sixth minute when Fenton John latched onto a cross into the box and tried to go around Hebburn keeper Kieran Hunter, but Hunter stood firm and blocked the attack.
Gateshead were in full control of the game as another chance fell them via Greg Olley being fed into the box and he went to shoot, but a vital challenge by Hebburn defender Tom Devitt kept the game tied at 0-0.
The game was becoming one way traffic as two chances came in two minutes for the visitors, in the 20th and 22nd. The first seen Aidan Rutledge and Greg Olley link up play, before Olley fired a shot straight at the Hebburn keeper.
The second chance once again included Rutledge, slipping in behind only for Hunter to intervene once again and keep the scoreline goalless.
The first clear opportunity for Hebburn came in the 26th minute, with Amar Purewal clean through on goal, but Kenton Richardson stopped the attack with a well-timed sliding tackle.
Eventually, in the 34th minute Gateshead drew first blood with Rutledge converting from close range to put them 1-0 up.
However, it was a quick response for the Hornets as we equalised only a minute later with Micheal Turner heading home from a Liam Noble corner.
Gateshead resumed their control with another chance coming at the 42nd minute, with Regan Booty attempting a lob over Hunter at the edge of the box, but just cleared the crossbar.
Gateshead found the back of the net once again on the brink of half-time, with Tommy Allan’s shot deflecting over Hunter to put them ahead once again.
Changes were expected and they were made with Gateshead fielding an entirely different team in the second half and Hebburn being slightly more patient with their subs.
Gateshead began imposing their will with their third goal coming in the 51st minute when new signing Will McGowan bent a wonderful whipped effort into the far corner.
A triple change came for Hebburn in the 58th as they looked to try and find a way back into the game.
It was a fine debut for McGowan as he scored his second of the evening from close range to put his side 4-1 up in the 62nd minute, strengthening Gateshead’s dominance in the game.
A night to remember for McGowan got better as he netted a hat trick on his debut, slotting it across Hunter making it 5-1 in a memorable night for the Heed Army.
Hebburn’s tired legs couldn’t match Gateshead's pace and their hunger for more goals.
Another chance came for Gateshead in the 71st minute through a free-kick that went unceremoniously wide of the post.
Gateshead just wouldn’t settle as they looked for more and got another in the 79th minute, as McGowan set up Owen Oseni to make it 6-1.
Just when you thought it was over, Hunter conceded a penalty in the 81st minute, which was converted by Luke Hannant slotting it in the bottom left corner, with Hunter rooted to the spot.
The full time whistle blew on another tough evening for the Hornets, but it was another good workout with more minutes in the legs.
Next up for Hebburn is another tough fixture at home next Tuesday against Darlington.
