Basford United vs Hebburn Town by Adam Ingoe
The Hornets, who secured their safety from relegation just last week, were determined to finish the season on a high — and they didn’t disappoint.
Right from the first whistle, Hebburn seized the initiative, pressing hard and dominating the attacking half. João Pedro was at the heart of the action early on, splitting the Basford defence and winning a free kick in a dangerous position in just the second minute. Leo Robison stepped up but narrowly missed the target.
The early miss didn’t knock Hebburn’s confidence. Just three minutes later, the breakthrough came — a pinpoint cross from Joe Posthill found Robbie Spence, who rose highest to head home and give the Hornets a deserved lead.
We kept the pressure on, and in the 21st minute doubled our advantage. Another brilliant move saw the ball find Joe Posthill, who made no mistake, slotting coolly past the Basford keeper to make it 2–0.
Basford responded with some dangerous counter-attacking play and came close to pulling one back in the 22nd minute. Dacres fired a shot from just outside the box, and Uveges pounced on the rebound, but our defence stood firm to keep the visitors out.
The second half saw both sides even out in their approach, but the Hornets continued to look dangerous in the attacking third.
A big chance came in the 56th minute when Liam Murray unleashed a shot from just outside the box, narrowly missing the target. The rebound fell to Amar Purewal, who almost produced a moment of magic with a brilliant effort towards the top corner — only to see it fly just over the crossbar.
Basford pulled one back in the 60th minute, with Uveges slotting past Cameron to make it 2–1.
Hebburn didn’t let the setback affect their momentum and kept pushing forward with real drive and determination. More chances followed, including in the 82nd minute when Leo Robison picked out Amar Purewal with a clever pass, but it just had a little too much weight and ran out for a goal kick.
In the 83rd minute, Basford found an equaliser as Goodman fired into the bottom corner to level the score at 2–2.
Despite the Hornets’ best efforts to find a late winner during injury time, the score remained level at the final whistle. The result means Hebburn finish the season in 14th place — with plenty of positives to build on for next season!
